Why Using Horsepower for Vacuum Cleaners is Not Relevant
Plenty of shoppers still read the horsepower figure first. However, vacuum horsepower is not relevant to how well a machine cleans. It describes the motor, not the air moving through the hose. Here is why the number misleads, and what to read instead.
Why vacuum horsepower is not relevant
Suction comes from motor strength and from the design of the airflow path. Because of that, a high horsepower rating does not promise better pickup. In fact, a lower-rated machine often pulls more at the nozzle. The rating also ignores the hose, the filter and the inlet, and each of those costs you airflow.
The rating is easy to inflate
Makers measure horsepower in different ways. As a result, two models are rarely comparable on the shelf. Many brands also quote peak horsepower. That is the brief maximum the motor reaches, rather than the power it holds during a real clean. Meanwhile the figure you live with goes unpublished.
The number confuses buyers
Most people do not know what horsepower means on a vacuum. So they choose on a figure that predicts nothing. In short, a spec meant to reassure ends up steering people toward the wrong machine. Worse, it hides the specs that would have helped.
What to compare instead
Ask for air watts and water lift. Air watts combine airflow and suction into one figure at the nozzle. Water lift shows how the unit copes when the hose is partly blocked, which matters with grit and pet hair. Then weigh filtration, hose reach and how easy the machine is to empty.

The short version
Vacuum horsepower is not relevant, because it never described suction in the first place. Instead, compare air watts, water lift and filtration. If a supplier will not put those figures in writing, treat that as your answer.
